The Meadowbrook School Science
program is designed to introduce students to the exciting and varied
world of science. The goals of the curriculum are many. To begin,
the science program is designed to help develop students' innate
curiosity about their world, acquire scientific knowledge and scientific
habits of mind, and to help students develop a positive attitude
toward science.
The science program broadens students'
skills for investigating the world, solving problems, and making
decisions. It is important for students to develop awareness that
they are an integral part of nature, they must learn to respect
the earth and its communities, and make a commitment to preserve
life on earth. The students develop specific scientific skills through
observation, measurement, collection, categorization, recording
and interpreting data.
Whenever possible, the methods used
to achieve these goals are founded in the experimental and inquiry-based
philosophy of science education. Goals and concepts presented are
intended to be built upon progressively though the grades.
Activities, experiments, demonstrations, reading,
current events, observations and interactions with the materials
and artifacts help explore the themes and concepts. Field
experiments are gained as students use the 18 acres of school
property. The science curriculum is also connected with other
subject areas such as social studies, math and language arts.
Kindergarten classes have science
for 30 minutes each week. First grade through fifth grade have science
for 90 minutes and sixth grade has science for 120 minutes each
week.
