The Literary Lantern
The Literary Lantern is Meadowbrook School's annual literary magazine where selected pieces of student writing (poems, stories, and essays), and black ink artwork are published.
Our literary magazine is unique because all submissions are evaluated by a student editorial board comprised of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who volunteer to give up one recess a week for eight weeks to do this. Using criteria for good literature taught by the magazines advisors, Mrs. Fletcher and Mrs. Kirby, these students read approximately 300 pieces of writing submitted by the students in preschool to sixth grade. The names have been removed from the writing so that the editorial board focuses only on the literary value of the piece in deciding to publish or not to publish. Members of the student editorial board design a new cover each year, assist in the layout, typing and illustrating. They also help distribute the Literary Lantern once it is published.
The Literary Lantern is distributed to all of the students (kindergarten to sixth grade), faculty, and staff of The Meadowbrook School.
